Want to see Black Emoticons? Apple got ya covered!
Apple Says They’re Working on More Diverse (Black) Emojis
Over the last few years, we’ve seen many updates to Apple’s iOS operating system and have greatly enjoyed using Apple’s ‘emojis’ to enhance our conversations, however there’s always been one glaring issue — there are no Black emojis or those featuring people of color.

Sure, there are several ethnicities and cultures represented within the character set…but that only makes it even more odd that anything related to Black culture just isn’t present.

MTV reached out to Apple CEO Tim Cook to get to the bottom of why there isn’t a greater diversity represented within the emoji character set and got an answer from Katie Cotton, vice president of worldwide corporate communications for Apple.
Her reply:
“Tim forwarded your email to me. We agree with you. Our emoji characters are based on the Unicode standard, which is necessary for them to be displayed properly across many platforms.  There needs to be more diversity in the emoji character set, and we have been working closely with the Unicode Consortium in an effort to update the standard.”

With the incredibly sensitive subject of race in today’s society, we can only hope that when Apple does finally come around with ‘ethnic’ emojis it doesn’t consist of dark yellow faces with afros or different variations of watermelon slices.

What would you include in a ‘diverse’ emoji set? Please not the pics posted ARE NOT the emoticon that apple intends to use!
