Racially-Charged ‘Witch Doctor Obama’ T-Shirt Popular At South Carolina Tea Party Convention
A racially-charged t-shirt featuring President Obama as a “witch doctor” who has hijacked “medicine” through the Affordable Care act has become popular at a South Carolina tea party convention.
The shirt depicts Obama as a “medicine man” in tribal clothes, with a bone through his nose. It reads that Obama is “your new doctor, coming soon to a clinic near you!”
Bob Cramer, the creator of the shirt, told Palmetto Public Record that people have stopped to ask him about his shirt and seemed interested in getting their own. He claims the shirt is “not racist, it’s political.”
“Some people tell me it’s racist,” he adds.
This isn’t Cramer’s only political protest gear, as he told the paper he also makes window decals of the image which sold out in a matter of months.
Palmetto Public Record notes that the image is not original, and has been “circulating the Internet since the Obamacare fight in 2009.”
Cramer says, “I’ve had people chase me down at gas stations asking me where they can buy one, and give me thumbs up on the highway.” He also claims, “Nobody’s tried to mess with my truck, even when I’ve been in black neighborhoods and other places.”
This is the second time this week that South Carolina has caused a racially-charged stir. On Monday, a taco restaurant in the state came under fire for its t-shirts showing a wooden box trap with tacos as bait, captioned “How To Catch An Illegal Immigrant.”
