2 TEENS charged in murder of teen outside South Side high school

A second teen has been charged with killing an 18-year-old Chicago high school student outside the school earlier this month in the Far South Side Jeffery Manor neighborhood, authorities said.
Jarone Carter, 16, has been charged as an adult with first-degree murder, attempted armed robbery and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, said Andrew Conklin, a spokesman for the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office.
A 14-year-old boy has also been charged with the murder but his name has not been released because he is being tried as a juvenile.
Carter, of the 10100 block of South Paxton Avenue, and the younger boy are accused of the Oct. 19 fatal shooting and attempted robbery of Terrance Wright in the 9900 block of South Yates Avenue, authorities said.
Carter is expected to appear in bond court on Wednesday and the 14-year-old will appear in Juvenile Court on Nov. 13, Conklin said.
According to a police report, the 14-year-old boy was identified as the suspected gunman who shot Wright and caused his death.
The 14-year-old boy's mother directed police to the boy who was arrested Sunday morning in his bedroom in the 9700 block of South Merrill Avenue, according to police.
Wright, a senior at Banner Academy South High School, was leaving the school in the 2300 block of East 99th Street about 3:40 p.m. when he was approached by five would-be robbers, police said.
The victim fought back when one assailant rifled through his pockets and was shot in the chest, police said.
Wright, who lived in the 5000 block of South Carpenter Street, was pronounced dead at 4:31 p.m. Oct. 19 at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to the medical examiner's office.
An autopsy performed Oct. 20 determined Wright died of a gunshot wound to the chest and his death was ruled a homicide, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
He would have had his 19th birthday on Oct. 28, authorities said.
According to the victim's aunt, Kathy Jackson, Wright had been picked on at his previous high school because he was gay, which led him to transfer to Banner last year. He quickly made new friends, she said.
"He had made a big turnaround from the old school to this one," Jackson said. "And now this happened."
Banner Academy South, 2330 E. 99th St., is a private school contracted by Chicago Public Schools. Its students are older students who previously have dropped out or were in danger of dropping out, according to the school's Website. Chicago Public Schools, under a policy followed since last year in which no student information is to be released without parents first signing a release form, refused to confirm any information about Wright.
