Lesbian Couple Shot in a Texas Park. One Killed!

Two lesbian teenagers were found shot in the head in a Portland, Texas park. Local news station KIII reports: “Police say 19 year old Mollie Judith Olgin of Engleside was found dead at the scene. 18 year old Mary Christine Chapa was shot in the head, clinging to life.”

Chapa is now recovering in an area hospital, which lists her as in critical but stable condition. Police Chief Randy Wright tells the Corpus Christi Caller the shooting happened late Friday night in a local park.
“Investigators believe at about that time the women walked with their assailant down a trail into knee-deep grass, where they were shot with a large caliber handgun, Wright said. Evidence didn’t indicate whether the women were with a man, woman or more than one person...”

The shooting comes as a violent shock to the small Texas town, which had been murder-free for almost two years. Mary and Mollie were well-loved by the community. Friends of the couple tell KRISTV they can’t imagine anyone wanting to harm the couple.
“I’ve been trying to think of anyone I know that would actually want to harm them for any reason, especially for them being a couple, and not one person has ever come to mind.”
But the police are still investigating the possibility that the girls were targeted for their sexual orientation. A writer for the Atlantic says it's ironic this crime happened during Gay and Lesbian Pride Month.
“Not that this violence has any place at any time, but it's particularly poignant [as] it comes when we're supposed to be celebrating tolerance. And sadly, Olgin will never get to see another gay pride march, another rainbow flag, or another step toward tolerance.”

A candlelight vigil is being held tonight Wednesday for the two girls. LGBT activist and organizer Cleve Jones calls on the community to “publicly respond” to this tragedy.
“Whoever shot Mary Christine Chapa and Mollie Judith Olgin, whatever the motive, regardless of where it happened, two beautiful girls were shot and one was killed. We need to honor the memory of Mollie and pray for the recovery of Mary.”
Vigils are being organized around the country in response to the shootings. And Cleve Jones put out a call via Facebook asking people to organize vigils honoring the young women.
