The Daily Buzz for Feb 17

Lupita N'yongo covers the latest issue of BACKSTAGE Magazine.
In the article, she talks about landing her breakthrough role in 12 Year A Slave and auditioning for Steve.
“I give myself homework when I have an audition. I give myself goals, and that’s how I check how I’m doing. It can be something simple like ‘listen,’ or ‘find your feet.’ And then afterward it’s an assessment, so in a way it’s not about booking the job or not. It’s about what I learned as an actor about that character. And if I can pinpoint something, then I’m in good shape. And if it’s all a blur, then not so good.”

When asked how she moved from her role in 12 Years to her current feature, Non-Stop, she said,
“As actors, you become an expert at starting over. Every single role brings with it an ignorance and an insecurity, and so you have to approach it with the same curiosity and humility. I’m always nervous. Doesn’t matter how many times I do this. But I remind myself it’s because I care. Steve would say, ‘Fail and then fail better!’ And that environment was so liberating. It’s not about getting it right. It’s about getting it truthful.”

Jury Unable To Convict Michael Dunn Of Murdering Unarmed Teen
A Florida jury found Michael Dunn  guilty on four out of five charges Saturday (Feb. 15), stemming from the shooting death of 17-year-old Jordan Davis.
Dunn was found guilty on three counts of attempted murder and a single count of firing a gun into a vehicle, but the jury could not come to a conclusion on whether or not he committed murder in the November 2012 incident. He is expected to be tried again for first degree murder.
Jurors deliberated for more than 30 hours, and refused the option to speak in a post-verdict conference. Although they weren't able to reach a verdict on the biggest of the charges, Dunn will spend at least 75 years in prison -- a minimum of 20 years for each of the four counts of which he was convicted.   "It's sad, for Mr. Dunn that he will live the rest of his life in that sense of torment," Davis' mother said after the verdict.
"I will pray for him, and I've asked my family to pray for him. But we are so grateful for the charges that have been brought against him, we are so grateful for the truth. We are so grateful that the jurors were able to understand the common sense of it all."
Davis would've turned 19 on Sunday (Feb. 16).  Dunn shot Davis at a Florida gas station because the teen and his friends refused to turn their music down. "My rear-view mirror was shaking," testified Dunn during the trial. "My eardrums were vibrating. It was ridiculously loud."
Following an exchange of words Dunn says he saw a gun in the teens' car, and pulled his own firearm from his glove compartment. He  dumped nine shots into the vehicle, hitting Davis --who was unarmed -- several times.
After the shooting, Dunn and his girlfriend left the scene. He was later apprehended at his  home in Satellite Beach, Fla. and claims shooting the teen out of self-defense. However, he did not seek a special "stand your ground" hearing, which could have granted him immunity from criminal prosecution.
"This defendant was disrespected by a 17-year-old teenager, and he lost it," Assistant State Atty. Erin Wolfson said. "Dunn wasn't happy with Jordan Davis' attitude. What was his response? You're not going to talk to me likes that. He took these actions because it was premeditated. It was not self defense."
Defense attorney Cory Strolla laid out an opposing view. "We understand Jordan Davis was human and this was a tragedy," he said. "Deadly force is justifiable if Dunn reasonably believed he faced an attempted murder of himself or another."
The partial conviction has left  his client "in disbelief," Strolla said.
Dunn will be sentenced March 24.

Ex-NFL Star Darren Sharper Accused Of Sexual Assault Of 7 Women In 4 States, Charged With Rape
Former All-Pro and Super Bowl champion Darren Sharper was formally charged with rape today after being accused of two sexual assaults from two separate women at the same time.
The charges have since increased to two counts of rape by use of drugs and five other drug-related felonies.

Reports Los Angeles Times:
Sharper appeared in court on Friday, but his arraignment was postponed until Feb. 20. He was ordered to surrender his passport and stay in Los Angeles, at an area hotel. The judge also ordered Sharper to stay away from Bootsy Bellows, a West Hollywood nightclub.
Sharper was arrested Jan. 17 and released on $200,000 bail. If convicted, the five-time Pro Bowl selection who played for the Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings and New Orleans Saints faces more than 30 years in state prison.
L.A. County Deputy District Atty. Stacy Okun-Wiese had sought in court Friday to increase Sharper's bail to $10 million because of allegations made against the football player in Louisiana, Nevada and Arizona.
On October 30, 2013 and January 14 of this year, Los Angeles County prosecutors are saying Sharper scoped out two sets of women at Bootsy Bellows and drugged and raped them after convincing them to go back to his hotel room.

One women alleges she "interrupted his action," when she woke up and another one said she woke up naked and caught him doing the same thing.
It was also reported that three other women and one man were drugged according to the records on file.

Tyrese & Norma Gibson Battling It Out Over Daughter, Shayla

This story right here is one of those that you hate to hear about. I know I do. Especially because, children are involved and we always want to see the best results for the child. I’m a huge Tyrese follower myself and I see the images, videos and messages that he posts about his daughter and to me from the outside looking in, he’s doing the damn thing. But, we’re hearing that he and his ex-wife are duking it out over the little one. How Sad!
The bad part is…. here you have a guy that seemingly LOVES spending QT time with his daughter and now their personal battles are putting a strain on that.
According to TMZ, his contempt has everything to do with the visitation bout he’s currently embroiled in with his ex-wife, Norma Gibson. The publication reports that she has refused to let him see his 6-year-old daughter, Shayla. Now, it appears their situation is about to get a whole lot worse before it gets any better.
Tyrese has reportedly taken legal action in an effort to resolve the issue. The Grammy-nominated singer’s representative spoke exclusively with US Weekly to formally address the situation.
“Norma Gibson, Tyrese’s ex-wife, denied him a court custodial order with their daughter Shayla on Feb. 11, 2014,” the rep said in the exclusive statement. “Tyrese arrived to pick up Shayla and was denied access by her mother. Mr. Gibson called the police to the scene, and Mrs. Gibson called TMZ.”
The representative also revealed that the two have been facing opposition for quite some time, as this particular incident isn’t the first of its kind. “Sadly, this is not the first time this has happened,” the rep said. “This has been an ongoing saga.”

The publication was also given details about the legal actions Gibson has taken, thus far, to level with his ex-wife. “Tyrese filed a 730 [custody] evaluation with the courts in 2013, and the family will face a court-sanctioned evaluation this month,” the rep explained. “Hopefully this will end this ridiculous feud and Shayla can return to a comfortable environment.”
Tyrese and Norma Gibson were together about five years before tying the knot in 2007. Shayla is the only child he has with his ex-wife. The couple has been divorced since 2009.

Unfortunately, legalities tend to be more strenuous on the child as opposed to the parents. Hopefully the two can come to some type of amicable agreement for the sake of the child.

Hot 97 Owner Emmis Communications Buys WBLS For $130 Million
Emmis Communications, the company that owns New York's Hot 97, has acquired another major radio station in the region after purchasing WBLS for $130 million. With the purchase of WBLS, along with a popular AM station, Emmis will now own the second-ranked radio station in the city.
Billboard reported on the acquisition, which was announced yesterday (February 13). Emmis paid outright cash for the purchase of WBLS 107.5 FM  and WLIB 1190 AM, the latter being the city's first station targeted towards Black listeners. Billboard has more.

From Billboard:
Emmis is expected to assume control of the stations on March 1 through a Local Marketing Agreement (LMA). The actual purchase of the station will take part in two stages -- $55 million following the expected FCC approval of the sale later this year, and approximately $76 million in February 2015.

For WBLS and WLIB, the sale is the official end of an era as one of the most prominent African-American-owned media entities. Shortly before the WBLS/Kiss deal, YMF Media, whose principals included Magic Johnson, assumed control from longtime owner Inner City Broadcasting
As far as corporate restructuring in the new deal, only Hot 97 SVP/GM Alexandra Cameron will be leaving the company. WLIB/WBLS GM Deon Levingston will remain in his position in overseeing the stations in addition to Hot 97.

Curvalicious chick Emily B. was the guest of honor at PYNK Mag's Birthday Edition dinner at Bryant Park Grill.  She rocked a sexy black lace dress exposing only a bandeau and hotpants to show off that body.  And her homies Meeka Claxton and Mecca Moore (owners of PYNK) made sure she had a fabulous...or Fabolous...birthday.
Em's long time bestie Adrienne Bailon was there at the True Indian Hair, Ultra Sheen Supreme and Dusse sponsored dinner looking hot.

And Em's fellow stylist chick Misa Hylton was there to celebrate as well.  Are we feeling this look?
Looks like fab times.

De La Soul Previews Their New Book [PHOTOS]
De La Soul did right by their fans on this Valentine's Day by sharing (most of) their entire catalog via their website. Also included in the batch of tunes was photos from their upcoming book.
If you were early to the part of the download, you might have been greeted by a message saying the Dropbox link was down. All seems to be well and you can proceed to download all of the Long Island trio's albums as planned. You get all of their LPs—minus The Grind Date, unfortunately. But they did include a set of "Remixes, Instrumentals, and Rarities," to make up for it, though.
As for the photos, they feature storyboards for the "Me, Myself & I" video, vintages ads and photos of the group. There are also the handwritten lyrics sheets to "Plug Tunin'" from 3 Feet High and Rising and "Oodles Of Os" from De La Soul Is Dead that should make you realize you were jacking up those words for years.

Luv those guys! #realhiphop

Beyonce's Half-Brother Living on Food Stamps
Back in August Mathew Knowles' baby mama Alexsandra Wright took the former music mogul to court claiming he was $24k behind in child support.
According to reports Mathew still hasn't paid a dime forcing Alexsandra to apply for public assistance...

Alexandra tells TMZ that Mathew Knowles now owes her $32k in back child support and that she and four year old Nixon have to make ends meet with $300 from her state issued EBT card.
Mathew Knowles failed to show up for his last court hearing but blamed the arrears on a clerical error.

You know ladies, for the life of me I can’t figure out why you don’t have a special someone to share Valentine’s Day with. Must be those crazy men who can’t see a diamond in the rough I suppose
