The Daily Buzz For July 25

US Postal Service Celebrates Wonder Woman 75th Anniversary With Commemorative Stamps
In partnership with Warner Bros, the U.S. Postal Service is commemorating the 75th anniversary of one of the most iconic Super Heroes of all time — Wonder Woman. The commemorative stamps will be officially unveiled during this weekend at San Diego Comic-Con, with the first-day-of-issue ceremony taking place at New York’s Comic-Con October 7.
First seen in October 1941 in a back-up story for All Star Comics #8, meant to test her appeal at a time when female superheroes were rare, Wonder Woman quickly broke out and headlined her own title by the next year. Subsequent generations came to know the star-spangled heroine with metal bracelets on her wrists and a magic lasso by her waist via her hit 1975-79 television series and roles in animated shows and movies, as well as her historic appearance on the cover Ms. Magazine #1 in 1972. This past March, Wonder Woman was seen for the first time in a live action motion picture with her introduction in the movie “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.”

The new issuance showcases four different stamp designs on a sheet of 20 stamps depicting Wonder Woman during four eras of comic book history: Golden Age (1941–55), Silver Age (1956–72), Bronze Age (1973–86) and Modern Age (1987–present). Check out below what the US Postal Service has in store for Diana Prince’s diamond anniversary.

#EMPIRE: Taraji P. Henson Relists Her Hollywood Hills Home
Not for lack of trying, but Taraji P. Henson can’t seem to sell her vaguely Moorish, multistory mini-manse in the Hollywood Hills that she relisted at a soupçon below $3 million. The seasoned boob-tube veteran bought the triple-decker residence in March 2010 for a smidgen under $1.7 million. The property first popped up for sale in December 2015 at $3.25 million before the price dropped substantially to a hair less than $3 million, and was later made available as a luxury lease at $12,000 per month.

The main living spaces are located on the middle level, and include a living room with a carved stone fireplace, a dining room that opens to a large center-island kitchen with carved wood cabinetry, and a game room with wine storage. One of the four en suite bedrooms was converted by Henson to a celebrity-style dressing room with built-in, mirrored wardrobes, custom shoe racks, and a shampoo station, while the top-floor master suite includes a fireplace, a city-view terrace, and a beige stone-tile master bathroom with a steam-equipped shower. On the ground floor, a wee, fairly narrow media room has theater seating, and one of the three garage bays at the street level holds a small collection of fitness equipment. Though tucked into a steep hillside, there’s a flat and grassy bi-level backyard with a spa, and semi-circular seating around a fire pit.

Our research shows that Henson, who bounced around Tinseltown since the mid-1990s and landed on “Person of Interest” and “Boston Legal” before she took on the plummy role of saucy, street-savvy, and unapologetically ruthless “Empire” queen bee Cookie Lyon, continues to own a more modest Spanish-style residence in the unsung Woodbury neighborhood in Glendale, which she scooped up in late 2002 for a bit more than $430,000 and has had on and off the market as a rental the last couple of years, asking between $3,100 and $3,400 per month.

New Music Video: V. Bozeman delivers Visual for “Dear Officer”!
V. Bozeman may still be working on her as-yet-untitled EP, but for now, she, too, is joining the masses of musicians speaking out about the world around us. The singer took to YouTube to reveal a visual for her recently released song, “Dear Officer,” featuring Young Life.

Directed by Stephen Garrett, the video relies on images of the past and present – shots of the civil rights movement of the ’50s and ’60s play in a montage alongside images from present-day protests, as V’s voice shares exasperation and poses the toughest of questions. “When did white sheets become uniforms? Am I hated simply cuz the way I was born?” the singer asks. V’s song is a conversation of sorts: a dialogue between a police officer and a protester that likely mirrors many conversations had at protests across the country.

The politically charged song and its accompanying visuals remind us that, as much as things have changed, for Black folks in America, much is also the same. Take a look at V. Bozeman’s “Dear Officer” visual for yourself.

Zoe Saldana Channels PRINCE For Net-A-Porter
Zoe Saldana perfectly channels none other than Prince for Net-A-Porter’s “The Edit.” In the cover story, the Hollywood actress shared her unfiltered thoughts on gender inequality in Hollywood and the importance of why women should support films made by women and for women.
“The high road is no longer silent,” Zoe said. “The high road is speaking up and saying, ‘You’re a d***! What you are doing is unfair. I’m not asking you to idolize me, I’m asking you to pay me equally, because you always come to me whenever you need me for a press tour!’”

She continued, “As women in positions of power, we have to use it to help other women. I got used to being the only girl in the room. Look at The Losers, look at Star Trek... It’s lonely! I couldn’t care less about male-driven stories and war movies, not because I’m not an intellectual individual, but because I want to know what’s happening to a woman.”

As for women not supporting female based films, she said, “The responsibility can’t only fall on women in the public eye. The audience have the power. They are the ones buying the tickets to all these man-made movies. There are films being made by female directors, by female writers, with lead female roles, but women are not going to those movies. We’re going with our boyfriends to hold their f***ing hands to go see a movie that we couldn’t care less about!”

NBA pulls 2017 All-Star Game from Charlotte, focuses on New Orleans
Without any movement by state legislators in North Carolina to change newly enacted laws targeted at the LGBT community, the NBA on Thursday decided to pull the 2017 All-Star Game out of Charlotte.
“Our week-long schedule of All-Star events and activities is intended to be a global celebration of basketball, our league, and the values for which we stand, and to bring together all members of the NBA community – current and former players, league and team officials, business partners, and fans,” the league said in a released statement.
The NBA is focused on the New Orleans’ Smoothie King Center as the host for All-Star Weekend and the All-Star Game on Feb. 19, league sources told The Vertical.

For now, there are still other cities trying to lure the All-Star Game, sources said.
NBA commissioner Adam Silver had threatened to move All-Star Weekend out of Charlotte unless a discriminatory North Carolina law aimed at the state’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community was changed – and time to do so ran out because of the logistics and planning the NBA needs to run its marquee midseason event, league sources said.

The issue is centered on North Carolina’s House Bill 2, a law that mandates transgender people use public restrooms corresponding to the sex listed on their birth certificates. The law also omits LGBT people from North Carolina’s anti-discrimination protections, forbids local governments from widening LGBT protections and excludes all forms of workplace discrimination lawsuits from North Carolina state courts.
“While we recognize that the NBA cannot choose the law in every city, state, and country in which we do business, we do not believe we can successfully host our All-Star festivities in Charlotte in the climate created by HB2,” the league said. “… We look forward to re-starting plans for our All-Star festivities in Charlotte for 2019 provided there is an appropriate resolution to this matter.”
Charlotte Hornets owner Michael Jordan had been counting on All-Star Weekend as a signature event for his franchise, and the economic impact of losing the All-Star Game for the franchise and region promises to be dramatic.

The NBA had discussed moving the All-Star Game to the new T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, sources said, but scheduling conflicts at the facility became part of the reason the idea never advanced past high-level league conversations during the Las Vegas summer league this month, sources said.

New Orleans hosted the All-Star Game in 2008 and 2014.

The Celebs come out to attend The Roc Nation’s Summer Classic Charity Game
Roc Nation Sports hosted its 2nd annual Summer Classic Charity Basketball Tournament at the Barclays Center for an evening of fun with a cause.
All proceeds from the event will serve to equally benefit programs for the CC Sabathia’s PitCCh In Foundation, Robinson Cano’s RC22 Foundation, Miguel Cotto’s Fundacion El Angel and Nick Jonas’ Beyond Type 1 Foundation. Sabathia, Cano, Cotto and Jonas served as captains to their celebrity basketball teams.

Roc Nation Sports senior management executive Shawn “Pecas” Costner, Fat Joe and T.I. were all in attendance, snapping it up with CC on the sidelines during the festivities.

Salute! Now that Tip has a distribution deal with Roc Nation and is a co-owner of TIDAL, it was only right he hit up the event.
Pop singer Demi Lovato was also in the building.
SnapChat King DJ Khaled, who is now managed by Jay Z, was also in the mix. Per usual, he had his cellphone out to chronicle his evening on his SnapChat account.
NYC rapper Fabolous brought his son Johan along for the fun where they hit the carpet alongside Khaled and baseball player Robinson Cano. Johan watched his dad ball out on the court from the stands.
"Hit The Floor" actor Rob Riley was all smiles on the carpet before hitting to court to play for Team Cano.
Whass Good E-40!
Rappers Jadakiss and Dave East, "Empire" star Bre-Z, "Power" star Rotimi and Power 105 personality DJ Envy played on CC's team.
As for the game? In game 1, Team Cano defeated Team Sabathia (above) with a final score of 45-34. In game 2, Team Jonas beat Team Cotto. Then, Team Jonas and Team Cano battled it out in the championship game.
And Team Cano, with former NFLer Terrell Owens, was victorious, 37-33!
The charity game was a total success as $1.1 million was raised for the four foundations. Nice!

Twitter Permanently Bans Blogger Milo Yiannopoulos on Abusive-Content Grounds
The unusual move comes after actress Leslie Jones sparred with the conservative blogger and received racially abusive tweets from many users Twitter suspended blogger Milo Yiannopoulos after he sparred with actress Leslie Jones causing other Twitter users to send racist and abusive tweets to the actress.

Twitter Inc.  has taken the bold step of permanently banning conservative blogger  Milo Yiannopoulos under its abusive-content policy, fueling a fierce debate about freedom of speech in the social-media age.

The company’s suspension of Mr. Yiannopoulos, tech editor of conservative site Breitbart, came after he sparred with actress  Leslie Jones on Twitter this week while users deluged her account with racist comments and hateful memes related to her new movie, “Ghostbusters.”

Among his tweets about Ms. Jones, Mr. Yiannopoulos, who on Monday wrote a negative review of “Ghostbusters,” tweeted that the actress was “barely literate.”
A permanent ban, especially of a high-profile user, is unusual for Twitter, which has at times been criticized for how it polices its users.

Mr. Yiannopoulos, who has been suspended in the past, is known for his inflammatory behavior that has tested the boundaries of Twitter’s code of conduct. Earlier this year, Twitter stripped him of his verification status, a blue check mark vouching for the authenticity of high-profile users.
In an email on Wednesday, Mr. Yiannopoulos said he didn’t believe his tweets amounted to harassment and denied playing a role in encouraging other users to send Ms. Jones hateful and racist content. “Did I say barely literate? That seems uncharacteristically generous of me,” he wrote in the email. “ ‘Barely literate’ is certainly a more defensible claim than Twitter’s baseless and dishonest characterization of me as some kind of harassment architect.”

He added, “My crime here was not liking her movie and having the wrong politics, to be clear. The tweets are a distraction.”
Mr. Yiannopoulos’s controversial Twitter postings have tested what the company promotes as an open-door policy when it comes to free speech.
Twitter on Tuesday acknowledged that it has come up short in dealing with abusive behavior.
“We know many people believe we have not done enough to curb this type of behavior on Twitter,“ the company said in its statement. “We agree. We are continuing to invest heavily in improving our tools and enforcement systems to better allow us to identify and take faster action on abuse as it’s happening and prevent repeat offenders.”

The company said it is reviewing its hateful-conduct policy and aims to help people curb abuse with new changes in the coming weeks.

SADNESS! Former Vikings and Cardinals coach Dennis Green dies at age 67
Dennis Green, who led the Minnesota Vikings to 97 wins in his 10 seasons as their head coach, died of cardiac arrest at age 67.
The news of Green’s death was reported by multiple outlets including NFL.com. Green coached 13 NFL seasons, from 1992-2001 with the Vikings and then 2004-06 with the Arizona Cardinals. His most memorable moment in that Cardinals run was a fiery rant after a loss to the Chicago Bears, but Green’s legacy goes far beyond that press conference blowup. He’ll be remembered for some great seasons with the Vikings and as a pioneer. Green was one of the first black coaches in NFL history.

“All of us at the Cardinals are incredibly saddened by the news of Dennis Green’s passing,” Cardinals president Michael Bidwill said in a statement. “Coach Green will rightly be remembered as a true innovator, leader and pioneer among football coaches. We express our deepest sympathy to his family and his many friends.”

The Vikings put out a statement on Friday morning: “We are incredibly saddened by the sudden passing of former Vikings Head Coach Dennis Green. Denny made his mark in ways far beyond being an outstanding football coach. He mentored countless players and served as a father figure for the men he coached. Denny founded the Vikings Community Tuesday Program, a critical initiative that is now implemented across the entire NFL. He took great pride in helping assistant coaches advance their careers. His tenure as one of the first African American head coaches in both college and the NFL was also transformative. Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Green family.”

Green, who also was a head coach in college at Northwestern and Stanford, helped build the Vikings into one of the NFL’s stronger franchises in the 1990s. The Vikings won four division titles and made the playoffs eight times in his 10 seasons. He also coached one of the best regular-season teams in NFL history, the 1998 Vikings. The Vikings went 15-1 with incredible rookie receiver Randy Moss leading the way, but were upset in the NFC championship game that season by the Atlanta Falcons. The Vikings also advanced to the 2000 NFC championship game with Green at the helm but were defeated by the New York Giants.\
Green became just the second black head coach in the NFL’s modern era when the Vikings hired him in 1992, following Art Shell. Green also became the second black head coach at a major college football program, when Northwestern hired him in 1981.

“Well, I feel very fortunate. I’ve always said I was born at the right time, with being born in 1949 and growing up right at the height of the Civil Rights Movement,” Green told Vikings.com in 2015. “I came along at a time when opportunity was created by very brave and determined people that came before me, and I was fortunate enough to benefit from it.”

He was popular with his players, and many players and others around the NFL expressed their grief on social media, including former Vikings running back Robert Smith.

Box Office News: 'Star Trek Beyond' boldly goes to $59.6M at box office
Star Trek Beyond scored a direct photon torpedo hit with audiences, taking $59.6 million in its opening weekend to easily win the box office.
Beyond rode critical success, scoring an 84% positive rating on the review aggregation site RottenTomatoes.com, while introducing Trekkies to the villainous Krall (Idris Elba) and dramatically destroying the USS Enterprise. Audiences gave it an A-minus at CinemaScore.

The third film in the rebooted film franchise landed amid the celebration of the TV series' 50th anniversary.
"This opening is a solid debut for a film and a franchise, showing that Star Trek still stands the test of time," says Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for comScore. "There have been 13 Star Trek films going back to 1979, rivaling James Bond in screen longevity."

The total did reflect a trend of opening weekend drops from the first two rebooted films: Star Trek scored $75.2 million in 2009, while Star Trek Into Darkness took $70.2 million in 2013, according to comScore.
Animated monster The Secret Life of Pets scored a strong second place with $29.3 million for a three-week total of $260.7 million.
Third place was a tie at $21.6 million between the rebooted Ghostbusters and the opening weekend of the microbudget horror film Lights Out.
Ghostbusters opened last weekend with a disappointing $46 million and a second-place finish behind The Secret Life of Pets. The Paul Feig-directed film starring all-female Ghostbusters saw a 53% drop this weekend and now has a domestic total of $86.9 million.

"Sony is pitching this as a comedy, but it didn’t hold like a comedy at the box office, which all Paul Feig films have done before,” says Jeff Bock, box office analyst for Exhibitor Relations. “Ghostbusters is playing more like a blockbuster that wasn’t a blockbuster. The international audience will decide whether this is really going to be another franchise."
With a production budget of $154 million, Ghostbusters has earned $36 million internationally and will continue to roll out around the world through August.
The overperforming Lights Out already qualifies as a hit, given its thrifty production budget of $5 million. The film scored a 77% approval rating on RottenTomatoes and a B from audiences.

Ice Age: Collision Course landed with a thud in fifth place in its opening weekend. The fifth film in the once-dominant Ice Age animated franchise scored an acorn-sized $21 million against a budget of $105 million.

“North American audiences are pretty tired of the franchise, which showed nothing new here,” Bock says. “But this has everything to do with Secret Life of Pets, which has just been a bulldozer, and also Finding Dory. There’s been too much family animation in rapid succession.”
