The Daily Buzz For April 18

Cam Newton Shares ‘EBONY’ Cover With His Mom & Also Graces Solo Cover
Cam Newton graces two covers for EBONY magazine’s April/May issue. On one, the Carolina Panters quarterback poses solo, while on the second – in honor of Mothers Day – he’s captured in a sweet moment with his mother, Jackie Newton. Inside, Cam opens up about “losing, fatherhood and the politics of being ‘the realest.'”

Read highlights from EBONY here:

On the set of a historic mansion in Atlanta, the Black Mecca that is Newton’s birthplace, the crew nervously paces about, worried that planned outdoor shots will be foiled by rapidly changing weather. A day that started with clear skies and sun was beginning to see serious changes unfold in the atmosphere. When Newton finally pulls up, solo, in his famed matte-blue and orange 2012 Chevrolet Silverado—a tribute to his alma mater, the team scrambles to set up a photograph, but it won’t happen. The boom of thunder startles everyone; the storm’s begun. “How y’all doing?” Newton says to no one in particular as he walks in. As soon as he sees his mother, Jackie Newton, being glammed up the makeup chair, he beelines to give her a hug.

“Look at you!” he teases. They small talk; it’s been a minute since they’ve seen each other. Together, they interact a lot like any other Black mom and adult son. In fact, when Newton notices that it is the hip-hop artist Future blasting, he asks the crew to turn to something “better for her.” Like a good son, he wants to protect his devoutly Christian mom from the harsh language. Mrs. Newton, however, cannot similarly protect her boy from the onslaught of sports analysis imbued with racial undertones.

Before the Panthers had even clinched the division title, the cacophony of discussion with Newton directly at the center reached a deafening high. The battery of commentary about his personal life (the birth of his child and old recycled stories about his family), chatter about his exuberant end zone moves and, of course, about the “dabbing” (the celebratory dance) seemed to overshadow an entire league. With every touchdown he and the team celebrated, there emerged another critic using racially coded language to tug at Superman’s cape. One headline made it plain: “Cam Newton and the Racism of NFL Fans.” There was even an open letter from a White woman who complained that the “pelvic thrusts” and “arrogant struts” of his victory dance were inappropriate for children.
He told reporters, “I’m an African-American quarterback that may scare a lot of people because they haven’t seen nothing that they can compare that to.” Needless to say, his less-than-graceful moment after the humbling loss didn’t serve to turn down the volume. But sometimes it is by venturing into the heart of the storm and looking defeat—and naysayers—squarely in the eyes that a man can discover who he truly is.

RHOA: Kim Fields Says No Decisions Have Been Made About ‘RHOA’ Return
Kim Fields initially made it clear that she would not be returning for another round of verbal insults and shade from her castmates on Bravo’s hit reality show “The Real Housewives of Atlanta.” Most just assumed it was because Kim realized – just as the other housewives did – that she simply didn’t click.
Others speculated that Kim’s beef with Kenya Moore was the reason she decided not to return. Many reports support this by adding that Moore’s obsession with uncovering the truth about Christopher Morgan’s sexuality (Field’s husband’s) led to Kim taking issue with the show’s producers.
OK Magazine reports that Kim ultimately walked away from the project because she had issue with the show’s producers for allowing the discussion of speculation that her husband is homosexual to air on the show.
While Kim did not request for the footage to be removed, it aired and she reportedly fears the long-term consequences.

OK! Magazine Monday. “Her kids will have to deal with the fallout for years to come.”
Even though Kim told the Rickey Smiley Morning Show last month that she was “done” with RHOA, the former child star now tells HelloBeautiful that “No decisions have been made about RHOA, as I am focusing on my dancing adventure.”
Kim says she’s currently too busy twirling her way through “Dancing with the Stars” to worry about what people have to say about her next career move.
“When designing a career, as I have been doing for the last 40 years, there are many factors involved,” Kim explained, adding that rumors are simply rumors and that everything she does is based on her career and her family.
“Any and all decisions made about my career are based on those factors, period,” she added.

For now, tune in to see Kim on “Dancing with the Stars” on Mondays on ABC.

#TEAMEMPIRE: ‘Empire’ co-stars Grace Gealey and Trai Byers get married on Grand Cayman Island
They went from co-stars on "Empire" to the ultimate co-stars in life.
"Empire" cast members Grace Gealey and Trai Byers got married last Thursday in an intimate ceremony on Grand Cayman Island, according to TMZ.
The wedding reportedly took place in a lavish mansion, where the two actors exchanged vows in front of approximately 50 people.

'It was a beautiful wedding filled with family and close friends," an insider told E! News. "Some cast members from 'Empire' were there. Grace looked stunning."
Byers, 32, proposed to Gealey last July on her 31st birthday after just a few months of dating.

The two stars met on the set of "Empire," which is currently in its second season. On the show, Gealey plays Anika Calhoun, who was engaged during Season 1 to the father of Byer's Andre Lyon character, Lucious Lyon.
Gealey opened up about what it was like being engaged to a co-star during an appearance on the "FABLife" talk show last October.
The two stars met on the set of "Empire," which is currently in its second season.
"I think that if you do get involved at your workplace, you have to know that this is something that you want to be invested in, and this is just not just something that is frivolous and fleeting," she said.
Season 2 of "Empire" runs through May 18 and has already been renewed for a third season.

#NEWMUSIC: Kelly Rowland Releases New Song “Gimme Love”
Kelly Rowland is one busy woman. She may be focused on her BET show “Chasing Destiny,” but she steps back to the mic with a brand new song called “Gimme Love.”

The uptempo two-step track, released in partnership with Seagram’s Escapes, finds the R&B diva asking for “a little love,” telling her admirer that he needs to make his move before she moves on to something new.
Rowland has teamed up with Seagram’s to release two of her own signature flavors: Pink Pineapple Passion and Orange Sassy Swirl. Her ads for the new drinks feature “Gimme Love” as a soundtrack.
“I’m Kelly Rowland and I’m all about keeping it colorful,” she says in one clip. “Wherever I am, whatever I’m doing, I’m always looking to put my personal touch on everything I do.”

In addition to this new collabo with Seagram’s, Kelly has been working on her follow-up album to 2013’s Talk a Good Game. “Everything is either ratchet or too much substance,” she recently said of her musical direction. “I have to find a middle ground. CONGRATS! Chrissy Teigen & John Legend Welcome Baby Girl
Chrissy Teigen is a momma! The model welcomed her first child with husband John Legend: Luna Simone.
Their gorgeous pair’s baby daughter arrived Thursday, April 14, weighing 6 pounds, 11 ounces.
The new parents seem so over-the-moon about their little girl, her FABLife mom has already posted on Instagram about her princess, saying, “She's here! Luna Simone Stephens, we are so in love with you! And sleepy. Very sleepy.”

This isn’t the first time the 30-year-old gushed about her bundle of joy with her hubby — who was born John Roger Stephens — on social media since announcing her pregnancy in October 2015.
\
The TV star was open and honest about needing a little help in the conception department, admitting that she got pregnant via in vitro fertilization. The Cravings author even revealed she picked her baby’s sex down to the embryo.
And Baby Girl Legend is so special, she’s even got presidential approval. Although the White House doesn’t usually comment on celebrity pregnancies, President Obama told Chrissy and John, 36, he was a fan of their baby name.
Yes, Luna, was already living up to her last name long before she was born. But we’re glad she’s finally here for all of Instagram to marvel at!

Oh? Idris Elba’s Secret Second Wife Speaks Out on their Marriage!
A 44-year-old woman named Sonya Hamlin says she is the secret, second wife to 43-year-old actor Idris Elba. As previously reported, Idris Elba most recently ended his relationship with
Naiyana Garth, the British mother of his two-year-old son.
And while the public has yet to hear from Garth, Sonya Hamlin is speaking out about the relationship she had with one of Hollywood’s leading men.

In an interview with The Mail, the woman who is a lawyer who lived in Maryland, says that they met and were married in 2006. She says of their relationship:

People were telling him he was going to ruin his career. He was being told it was an important part of his image to be a single sex symbol in Hollywood and being married would damage that. It was very sad. Idris and I were madly in love, but he was getting a lot of flak for being married. Everyone was like, “Dude, you’re the hottest sex symbol!” “It wasn’t the right look”, that’s what they were telling him. I wanted to save the marriage.’

Peep more excerpts from the interview below.

On how she met Elba:

I didn’t really know who he was. My friend just said he was a really nice guy. He wasn’t a superstar back then. Living in Maryland I was vaguely familiar with The Wire, but I didn’t know who he was. We met at a crowded gathering with a few other people. But we hit it off. We meshed very well. He’s not shy and neither am I, and we fell very much in love with each other. We went on normal dates – dinner, movies – and we used to have fun in the house. We used to co-ordinate our outfits when we dressed. And he was a very good cook. If we woke on a Sunday morning we might go out to brunch, or stay at home and make breakfast. Idris loved eggs and porridge, or would cook Jamaican food: he loved aki and saltfish.
‘He’s a homebody. He didn’t like to be out at night. He loves to watch TV, and listen to music. We were very casual. We’d lounge around in jeans and a T-shirt.’

Eloping in Las Vegas, while they were in Nevada for the Mayweather vs Judah boxing match:

We didn’t go to Vegas with plans on getting married. We were just chilling on sun-loungers early in the day by the pool. I was drinking a Mimosa, and we were talking, and were both in a great mood. We had talked about marriage before and how we would want to keep it plain and simple. We had been together several months already, and knew it was right. We were both madly in love by then, and we were like, “Let’s just do it!” We were both excited. It was a mutual decision. As far as we were concerned, we were going to spend the rest of our lives together. He got me a beautiful diamond ring. We picked it and it was not cheap. He was generous.’

Jumping the broom at the Little White Wedding Chapel:

It took several hours before we made it there, but neither of us was nervous. When you have that chemistry and you’re that much in love, why would you be nervous?

On her career soaring, but Elba’s Hollywood career struggling:

I had a flourishing law practice and it was the height of the real estate boom, and he was making the transition into the movie industry. It was hard. He’s prideful. He wasn’t a kept man – he wouldn’t let me keep him. He’d whip out his wallet and pay for anything. He’d spend his last penny on me. He’s a man’s man.

Only six weeks after tying the knot, Elba decided he wanted to end their marriage:

Some people used to say, “Why her?” That’s what they were telling him. It used to upset him. He was like, “Why don’t people just let me be happy?” I couldn’t understand how it would damage his career because I saw actors like Denzel [Washington] be successfully married. But I don’t think those actors’ wives are running law firms. It wasn’t easy for either of us,’ Sonya continues. ‘We sat down here in Maryland and decided we were going to file. We wavered a couple of times. We were both just sad. He hugged me, of course. It was very sad.

How she handled their split:

There was no certainty that he was going to go on and be a big star, and he had a daughter to provide for, and maybe he had to make the tough decision. He was protective of me, but he listened to people in his ear. He was the love of my life. I was always successful, and so having a failed marriage was hard, and then my business took a huge plunge in the recession. It was a double-whammy for me. I didn’t date anybody for years.

How she feels about Elba:

He’s the best actor you have in Britain, and will probably be the next James Bond, and he’s won awards and Emmys,’ she says, though in reality Elba has earned four Emmy nominations without a win. ‘He’s got an Oscar coming, no question.’
Elba’s relationships with his most recent ex Naiyana Garth, along with exes K Michelle and rumored love interest Naomi Campbell:

‘Maybe anything after that wasn’t genuine, otherwise he would have married them. I’d be happy for him if he got married again, and he genuinely loved that person. I’m not a jealous person. I want him to be happy, just like I’m sure he wants me to be happy. I don’t think he’s ever going to have a problem being lonely.

According to the site, today, her law practice is thriving once again, and she is in a good relationship. [The Daily Mail]

Ecuador earthquake: Death toll jumps to 238; more than 1,500 injured
At least 41 people were killed when a powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Ecuador, destroying buildings and sending terrified residents dashing from their homes, authorities said late on April 16.
At least 41 people were killed when a powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Ecuador, destroying buildings and sending terrified residents dashing from their homes, authorities said late on April 16.
Rescue crews searched desperately through rubble Sunday for survivors of a magnitude-7.8 earthquake that struck coastal Ecuador.

The death toll soared from under 100 on Saturday night to 238 on Sunday afternoon -- and it's expected to rise. At least 1,500 people were injured, said Ricardo Peñaherrera of Ecuador's national emergency management office.
The hardest-hit area was the coastal Manabi Province, where about 200 people died, Peñaherrera said. The cities of Manta, Puerto Viejo and Pedernales, a tourist destination, saw the most devastation but damage was widespread.
"It was the worst experience of my life," survivor Jose Meregildo said Sunday about the tremors that violently shook his house in Guayaquil, 300 miles away from the quake's epicenter. "Everybody in my neighborhood was screaming saying it was going to be the end of the world."
The earthquake hit Saturday night, buckling overpasses, causing houses to collapse and knocking out power in Guayaquil, Ecuador's most populous city, authorities said. People left their homes and wandered around, some sleeping in the streets.
People looking for family and friends frantically dug with their hands and tools until excavation equipment arrived. Emergency officials recovered one body from the scene of a bridge collapse there.
Video showed rescuers looking for a young girl underneath the rubble of the Hotel Miami in the province of Manabi, finally pulling her out and taking her away on a stretcher.
Armed forces, police deployed
In a race to help residents, Ecuador deployed 10,000 soldiers and 4,600 police officers to the affected areas. The armed forces built mobile hospitals in Pedernales and Portoviejo and set up temporary shelters.

The military also brought in more K9 units to aid the search for survivors -- and bodies.
"The lack of water and communication remains a big problem," Peñaherrera told CNN en Español. "Many highways are in bad shape, especially in the mountainous area because it has been raining recently due to (the) El Niño weather phenomenon."
Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa rushed back to Ecuador and was expected to arrive Sunday after attending a Vatican conference in Rome, the vice president said in a televised address.
During his Sunday prayer, Pope Francis asked for those present to pray for the people affected by the earthquakes in Ecuador and Japan.
"Last night a violent earthquake hit Ecuador, causing numerous victims and great damages," Francis said. "Let's pray for those populations, and for those of Japan, where as well there has been some earthquakes in the last days."
Nightlife venues closed
Ecuador's Interior Ministry ordered all nightlife venues in affected areas closed for the next 72 hours.
Also, the nation's soccer federation said it has suspended the remaining matches of the current round of

The tremor was centered 27 kilometers (16.8 miles) southeast of the coastal town of Muisne, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
It's the deadliest earthquake to hit the nation since March 1987 when a 7.2-magnitude temblor killed 1,000 people, according to the USGS.
The earthquake left shoppers shaken in Guayaquil. Video footage from a store showed kitchen utensils swinging back and forth as some items tumbled off shelves.
There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries in the capital of Quito, 173 kilometers (108 miles) from the quake epicenter.
The PacificTsunami Warning Center said the tsunami threat following the earthquake has "mostly passed."
An earlier warning for other nations with coastlines on the Pacific was canceled.
